Less: The New Anti-Materialist Wellness

Pratt Institute Masters of Science in Package Design
‘20 Capstone Project

Less is a commentary on the commercialism behind the wellness industry. We are told to buy more, be more, and do more in the name of wellness. This project posits the need for less, not more, in order to be well. Its aim is to gently remind people that there is abundance in presence.

This project began as an exploration into the topic of reductive living for wellness. As designers we are often tasked with making people buy more and ‘converting’ our target audience. Are there avenues for designers to influence people to consume less? Can we promote conscious consumption to make a positive impact on individual wellness and the environment as a whole? Can we make people more aware of their consumptive habits?

The exploration spans from meditative animations aiding in breathwork exercises to an exhibition design focusing on grounding into the five senses, with an accompanying virtual game geared towards the era of Covid 19.
